Bird I.D. help

I let the doggies out on our back deck for a little bit yesterday and something scared them and they came running to get back in the house! I thought maybe the wind have blows some leaves and they are big chickens!! About five minutes later I went to put something out in our barn and the dogs came with me. Kodee run up the deck steps and I seen something run across the deck. My first thought was skunk....

I got the dogs put back in the house and rounded up the hubby to help find out what it was and get it off the deck. It was sure scared. I opened the gate and blocked a couple of places with the chairs and then took a seat cushion off one of the chairs to help direct it. After about ten minutes it finally found the open gate. It never tried to fly. It walked out into the yard and laid down for a few minutes to rest and then toddled off into the woods behind our house.

A friend of mine emailed the pictures to a taxidermist friend of hers and he thought maybe it was juvenile vulture.

This past weekend we made a quick trip to Pennsylvania to pick up a new work truck. We stayed all night in Bedford. We looked for a few things to see and do while there and found the Flight 93 Memorial. It is a temporary one, but they are constructing the permanent memorial. They have a chain link fence keeping you from going down to the actual site and people leave things on it in remembrance. I would love to go back and see the permanent memorial once it is done.

See the flag in the photo above? That is the actual site of where the plane went down.

May 21, 2010 - Pappajohn Sculpture Park and Iowa State Capitol

On Friday the 21st of May we decided to stick around Des Moines and see some of the sites. The Pappajohn Family donated sculptures to be put into a park in downtown Des Moines. They were very interesting to see. Then we went to see the Iowa State Capitol Building. It is so beautiful inside and out!!

May 19, 2010 - Amana Colonies

The second full day of my Iowa vacation we loaded up the car and drove to the Amana Colonies. It is a very cool little town! Something like Waynesville, they have antique shops and just a fun little place to walk around and visit the stores. We had lunch at The Colony Inn and it was very good!!

9-22-09 - last pic I took of the caterpiller I had found a week or so before in the Japanese Maple Tree in the front yard.

9-26-09 - I found the cocoon in the same tree on this day. I clipped the branch it was hanging on and put inside a mesh butterfly enclosure I had bought at Bass Pro Shop.

5-25-10 - Hubby was keeping an eye on the butterfly enclosure I put the cocoon in. He let it out of the encloser on this day and took pics for me. I was in Iowa on vacation!

On Thursday my son and daughter in law took me to Krohn Conservatory @ Eden Park in Cincinnati. They have a butterfly exhibit each year. This year it is Butterflies of Japan on exhibit. It was so much fun!! And we took lots and lots of pictures.

I was walking around last night in our yard checking trees for bird nests.  We have three pin oak trees in our front yard that we planted as little baby's eight years ago!!  I found these marble looking things and funny growths on the branches.  I did a little research on the internet and this is what I found.

The first two are roly poly galls and the other is a horned gall.  We need to talk to a couple of my hubby's buddy's who own landscaping businesses and see what we need to do about it.

I had broke up and thrown some bread out on the snow after work yesterday for the birds and squirrels. We got about two inches of snow last night and it was fun watching the squirrel dig up some bread to eat. Every time it found a piece it would run up on the deck rail and eat it.

Today we got another six inches of snow! Three more expected by morning. I got my black construction paper out of the freezer and put the macro lens on my camera and went out on the porch and messed with snowflakes some more. I need to do more work on focus, but thought these turned out pretty cool.

I was a little worried because I hadn't seen my two caterpillars in a couple of days since it had started raining. I was talking to my dad on the phone this afternoon and walked outside and seen this awesome cocoon wrapped in japanese maples leaves!!! No wonder I couldn't find those bright green caterpillars. Haven't found the second one yet...But I bet it is there in the tree.

*edited...I was doing a litte research on the internet this afternoon and I think this might be a Polyphemus Moth caterpillar*

Caterpillar number 1 is about 2 3/4 inches long and as big around as my index finger.
Caterpillar number 2 is just a little bit smaller now.
If anyone has any idea what type of caterpillar this is and what it will become, please post a note in my comments and I will update to let everyone know!!

Grandma and I went to the Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines while I was in Iowa. It is a real nice zoo. I had never seen a baby Flamingo before and there were three of them on display! A flamingo was running around like crazy and the otters were really putting on a show. Grandma and I had fun watching the monkeys too!

Last Friday I took a trip to Iowa to visit my Grandma. On Sunday we went to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.

A groundbreaking ceremony on Veterans Day in 2006 initiated the project. Construction began in late July of the following year, with the dedication occurring on July 3, 2008. At the time of the dedication, over 1,000 veterans and eligible dependents had already been determined eligible. The first of 76 scheduled interments began on July 7th.

The flowers that I transplanted from the mulch are doing pretty good. There are three different color variations growing right now. The fourth pot hasn't bloomed yet, but has a lot of buds. I still have no idea what type of flower this is, so if you have an idea maybe let me know so I can post it.

When I first got home from work I opened the blinds on the sliding glass door. I noticed the woodpecker, so I moved real slow to get my camera and he stayed while I took a couple pictures! Then I moved out on the deck to sit down to see if a hummingbird or two would show up. This sparrow was sitting on the hanger for the hummingbird feeder, after I took this picture the hummingbird flew by and dive bombed him! Sent him off packing. While I was standing and looking at the perennial garden this squirrel climbed up the birdbath to get him a drink!! He was suprised when he heard the camera clicked. I got a few pictures before he ran off to climb a tree. Right before I came inside a mourning dove stopped for a drink or two!

This past weekend we were going to pull weeds and mulch the front flower bed in the front yard. We didn't though because it was so hot and humid. I am so glad we didn't!! Yesterday I found four plants and one of them was blooming a pretty pinkish purple flower. This top deep purple flower bloomed today. I had bought a hanging basket of these deep purple flowers last year and I guess some of the seeds dropped and bloomed this year!! Today I dug up four of these plants and put them in pots.

We have a BUNCH of tomatoes now! Hubby picked a five gallon bucket full yesterday and gave them to a buddy who is going to can them for himself. The next five gallon bucket we give him he will can for us!! I thought the heart shaped tomato in the first pic was cool.

These are some flowers that come up at our shop every year. The strange thing is the leaves of this flower come in the early spring, then they die off and the end of July first part of August just this flower comes up. Anyone know what type of flower this is. It looks like a type of lily to me.
